On December 18, 2024, ADA University hosted the conference "The Role of Green Energy in Combating Climate Change," organized by the Union of Young Diplomats of Azerbaijan in collaboration with the STEM analytical center.
The primary objective of the event was to emphasize the importance of green energy in addressing climate challenges, promote the use of alternative energy sources, and discuss strategies for sustainable development.
The conference brought together experts, policymakers, and students, creating a platform for exchanging ideas and exploring innovative solutions in the energy transition. A special focus was placed on youth engagement, which not only deepened their understanding but also fostered a forward-thinking vision for climate policy.
Prominent Azerbaijani experts in energy, transportation, law, and geopolitics delivered speeches at the event. The conference was opened by Orkhan Yolchuyev, director of the STEM analytical center, who, in his keynote address, underlined the importance of transitioning to clean energy to reduce emissions and combat climate change.
Elnur Aliyev, Dean of the Academy of Public Administration under the President of Azerbaijan, highlighted the social dimensions of green energy from an administrative perspective.
Energy expert Ilham Shaban acknowledged the challenges and costs of transitioning to green energy but emphasized its critical role in creating a sustainable future: “This path demands great effort, but its significance for future generations cannot be overstated.”
Transportation expert Rauf Agamirzaev provided practical advice to young people, encouraging them to stay informed about global trends and actively contribute to the development of green energy. He also noted Azerbaijan's rapid progress in adopting renewable energy sources (RES) in the transport sector.
Nargiz Mammadova, an international relations expert at the STEM analytical center, discussed the geopolitical realities shaped by the global adoption of green energy. She highlighted the European Union's initiative to achieve 100% RES by 2050 and offered insights into the regional geopolitical outlook.
Shahla Jalilzade, an expert from the Center for Social Research, underscored the importance of widespread adoption of green energy in Azerbaijan. She further noted that hosting COP29 in Baku reinforces Azerbaijan's commitment to green transformation and its effectiveness in promoting sustainability.
The final speaker, Toghrul Velikhanli, a specialist in energy law, stressed the need for a robust legal framework to facilitate the efficient implementation of green energy. He remarked that, like oil and gas, green energy requires clear regulatory measures to ensure sustainable development.
Following the main program, students had the opportunity to interact with the speakers, ask questions, and engage in discussions on green energy.
