The Georgian government has filed an official lawsuit against the UK-based broadcaster BBC over a report alleging the use of chemical weapons against protesters in Tbilisi in late 2024. This was announced by Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze during a live broadcast on Imedi LIVE.
“We have filed a lawsuit against the BBC and are awaiting their response. If there is no appropriate response, we will continue the dispute both with the UK regulatory authority and are also prepared to file a case in an international court. The Georgian government will use all available mechanisms to defend the truth on this issue,” Kobakhidze stated.
According to the prime minister, the claims made in the BBC report were entirely false. He described as “most disgraceful” the fact that journalists spoke in speculative terms on air, while the information published on the broadcaster’s website was presented as established fact.
“This was a deliberate lie, which, unfortunately, the BBC — once a highly respected media organization — resorted to,” Kobakhidze added.
