Many of the world's largest polluting nations have failed to meet the U.N. deadline for submitting updated climate plans, a setback in efforts to combat global warming, especially after U.S. President Donald Trump's election. Nearly 200 countries signed onto the Paris Agreement and were expected to submit new national climate plans by Monday, outlining strategies to reduce emissions by 2035. However, as of the deadline, key polluters like China, India, and the European Union had not complied.

Bill Hare, CEO of the Climate Analytics institute, expressed disappointment, noting the public's expectation for a strong response to the fact that global warming has now reached 1.5 degrees Celsius for a full year, yet no substantial actions have been taken.

The 2015 Paris Agreement aims to limit global warming to 1.5°C (2.7°F) above pre-industrial levels, but current efforts remain far from achieving the significant emissions reductions necessary to meet this goal. Last year marked the first time the global temperature exceeded this threshold.
