Construction of new airports has begun in three resort zones of Kazakhstan, according to the country’s Ministry of Transport.
"Under the directive of the head of state, to boost domestic tourism and passenger air transport, construction of three new airports in the resort areas of Zaysan, Katon-Karagay, and Kendirli commenced in 2025. These projects aim to stimulate economic development in these regions and attract both domestic and international tourists," the statement reads.
The Ministry also noted that in 2024, as part of the modernization of aviation infrastructure, three new passenger terminals were launched at international airports in Almaty, Shymkent, and Kyzylorda. The passenger capacity of the new terminal at Almaty International Airport increased from 2.5 million to 14 million passengers per year, Shymkent Airport from 800,000 to 6 million, and "Korkyt Ata" Airport in Kyzylorda from 300,000 to 2 million passengers annually.
Additionally, in the Khorgos – Eastern Gate Special Economic Zone, a Kazakh-German company, SKYHANSA, is implementing a project to build a passenger terminal with a capacity of 500 passengers per hour, a fuel storage facility with a capacity of 550,000 tons per year, a cargo terminal capable of handling up to 250,000 tons of goods per year, an aviation-technical center for aircraft maintenance, and facilities for tourism, retail, and entertainment services for the population.
Kazakhstan’s fleet of aircraft is also expanding by 10-15 planes annually. By the beginning of 2025, the total number of aircraft will reach 102.
