Kuwait is set to sign a contract with China Communications Construction Company (CCCC) for the construction of the Mubarak Al-Kabeer Port on Bubiyan Island in the northern part of the country. The project is estimated to be worth approximately $4 billion.

The Mubarak Al-Kabeer Port is considered a strategic infrastructure project aimed at establishing a secure regional transport corridor and positioning Kuwait as a major trade hub. China, for its part, seeks to integrate the port into its Belt and Road Initiative.

Kuwaiti authorities expect the project to support economic diversification, contribute to GDP growth, and help restore the emirate’s commercial and financial role in the region. According to the government, around 50% of the work under the first phase has already been completed, though details regarding the remaining stages have not been disclosed.

The port is among several large-scale projects being implemented by Kuwait with Chinese support, including power plants and hydrotechnical facilities, renewable energy and waste management projects, as well as the construction of new cities.

Kuwait and China strengthened their infrastructure cooperation following the signing of several memoranda of understanding in 2023 during a visit to Beijing by then-Crown Prince Sheikh Mishal Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah, who became Emir of Kuwait in December 2023.
